LAURENCE ELLE GROUX
" I want to believe that my art can heal not only my soul but it can bring healing to the people as it is being created with love."
BIOGRAPHY
Laurence Elle Groux is an introspective self-taught artist working in stoneware ceramics and oil etching. The core inspiration of her work is the human psyche. She explores emotional landscapes through abstract form. Born and raised in a small village in Switzerland, Groux moved to the US in 1996 where she was immersed in the New York art scene.
Influenced by artistic practices and design motifs found in Pre-Colombian, Assyrian, Renaissance, Art Nouveau, Modernism and Outsider's arts, Groux’s ceramic works are tactile, curvilinear abstract sculptures accentuated by organic shapes and patterns.
Her oil etchings further explore the possibilities of line and shape in intricate and delicate patterns of embellishment. Groux’s work inspires visual curiosity through the generous movement of material and coalesces as tangible objects of energy and beauty.
Rooted in intuition and gesture, her pieces channel internal states. Grief, tenderness, resilience, into organic, flowing constructions that feel both ancient and futuristic. Her work challenges the boundary between vessel and sculpture, offering forms that appear in flux, as in the act of becoming.
Elle’s work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Switzerland, and Philadelphia and are housed in collections in Pennsylvania, New York, California, Switzerland, Canada and Mexico. Additionally, she is the recipient of Best in Show for Sculpture 2021 at the Ellarslie Museum in Trenton, NJ, juried by Dr. William R. Valerio, Director of the Woodmere Museum of Philadelphia, PA. She curated a show with CHASAMA called the BODY MIND SPIRIT, a four people group show in Chelsea, New York. She was at the Affordable Art Fair SPRING 24 and 25 in New York City with Gallery LEG.
Her works was chosen by Kelly Long who is the Senior Curatorial Assistant for the Whitney Museum of American Art, NYC and David Max Horowitz, Assistant Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NYC for two different group shows at the Greenwich Art Society in Connecticut.
She is working at present simultaneously on two new bodies of work. First, she is exploring new avenues with the "Healing Circles" series of drawings and working on sculptures based on the concept of Abstract Nouns. Abstract Nouns are that we cannot experience with our senses. I.E., Love, Hate, Fear, Hope, Solace, Innocence, etc.
ART STATEMENT
I aim to capture energies of wonder and magic in my work by exploring emotional landscapes through abstract forms.
Biomorphic and organic abstract ceramic sculptures are my primary studies. Each piece is born from a deep introspection about the human psyche. I hope my audience takes the time to explore and question their reactions to my creations, allowing them to stimulate their consciousness and foster intimate engagements and reflections.
Rooted in intuition and gesture, my pieces channel internal states such as hope, fear, solace, and compassion into organic, flowing structures that evoke both ancient and futuristic qualities.
Stage 4 Lung Cancer makes me realize that one cannot take the ability to create for granted. Therefore, I view every new work as a miraculous creation where my fears, sorrows, joy, and love can pour forth and capture the essence of the human experience.
"Her work is a prayer, or conversation, in physical form to God and creation.
It is an attempt at one would like to believe medieval artist attempted when they crafted their untitled works in the great cathedrals of Europe, or what any artist might attempt - a connection with something greater than one's self"
- Dan Badder, The Manhattan Times.
"Laurence Groux's untitled sketch of bird forms emerging from a tangle of black lines has a decorative, improvisatory charm, as if Picasso or Miró had somehow got hold of a PC one afternoon."
- Bill Roberts, PhD, Saatchi Online contributor
